Mt Hood is one of the icons of Oregon and a popular year round attraction. Snow skiers and winter enthusiasts have traveled to the mountain for years to participate in winter activities. During the Great Depression President Roosevelt championed the Work Progress Administration (WPA) to create jobs by employing workers on government funded projects. One of those projects was the building of Timberline Lodge near the summit of Mt Hood. The lodge is constructed of local timber such as douglas fir and huge beams fashioned from these trees are visible inside the lodge. The interior of the lodge is impressive and has a six-sided stone chimney 92 feet high by 14 feet in diameter with three fireplace opening on the ground floor and three more on the first floor. Timberline Lodge was dedicated by President Roosevelt September 28, 1937 and is still publically owned but privately operated.
